Painting and Staining
What the work involves.
Professional painting and staining protects wood and makes the outside of the house look cared for. We paint and stain fences, garages, siding and more.
The Texas sun is the reason exterior finishes do not last as long here as the label says. Ultraviolet light breaks down paint and stain from the surface in, and the swing from a wet spring to a 100 degree summer makes wood swell and shrink underneath. A cedar fence left bare goes silver-gray within a year or two and starts to check and split soon after.

The Difference
What to know before you decide.
Fence staining is the most common exterior finish job in the neighborhoods around Lewisville, where nearly every back yard has a wood privacy fence. A penetrating, semi-transparent stain soaks into the wood and slows weathering, and it wears away gradually instead of peeling. Most stained fences in North Texas benefit from a fresh coat every two to three years.
Painted surfaces such as trim, garage doors and siding need their prep more than they need their paint. Loose and peeling paint is scraped, bare wood is primed, and gaps are caulked before the finish goes on. Paint over a failing surface peels again along with it.

Painting and Staining, answered.
How often should a wood fence be stained in Texas?
Every two to three years for most fences, sooner on sides that take full afternoon sun.
How long after a new fence is built should it be stained?
New pressure treated wood usually needs a few weeks to dry out before it accepts stain well. Cedar can often be stained sooner.
Paint or stain for a fence?
Stain for most wood fences. It soaks in and wears away gradually, while paint forms a film that peels and has to be scraped before the next coat.
