Storm Damage
What the work involves.
Hail gets the headlines in North Texas, but wind does its share. Straight-line winds from spring thunderstorms regularly gust past 60 miles an hour across Denton County, and winter brings the occasional ice storm that loads gutters and tree limbs with weight they were never meant to carry.
Wind damage starts at the edges. The shingles along the eaves, rakes and ridge catch the most uplift, and once the adhesive strip under a shingle lets go, the shingle lifts and flaps with every gust after that. Creased shingles, missing tabs and exposed underlayment are the visible signs. A lifted shingle that settles back down can look normal from the ground while the seal underneath has already failed.

The Difference
What to know before you decide.
Ice storms do a different kind of damage. Ice collects in gutters and along the eaves and pulls gutter runs away from the fascia. Branches heavy with ice come down on roofs. Where ice dams form, meltwater backs up under shingles, which is exactly where the ice and water barrier on a properly built roof earns its place.
A storm damage inspection looks at the edges and ridge for lifted and missing shingles, checks flashing and vents, and looks at the gutters, fascia and anything a falling limb could have hit. The damage is documented for insurance, and we work with your insurance where the storm damage supports a claim.
What happens next depends on the damage and on your insurance. Widespread lifting across a roof usually means the sealant has failed broadly. Where a roof is being replaced, it is rebuilt with premium shingles over double bonded synthetic underlayment, with ice and water barriers and vents. Where a gutter was torn loose, the run is replaced and matched to the rest of the system.
If water is coming in after a storm, call (940) 281-5961. Put a bucket under the drip, move anything valuable out of the way, and if the ceiling is sagging with water, a small hole at the lowest point lets it drain in a controlled way instead of bringing the drywall down.

Storm Damage, answered.
What wind speed damages a roof?
Most architectural shingles are rated for winds between about 60 and 130 miles an hour when new and properly installed. Older shingles whose sealant has aged can lift in much lower gusts, and edges installed without enough nails fail first.
Is wind damage covered by homeowners insurance?
Sudden wind damage from a storm is covered by most Texas homeowner policies, subject to the wind and hail deductible. Wear, age and poor installation are not.
What should I do if my roof is leaking after a storm?
Catch the water, move valuables, photograph the damage for your claim, and call (940) 281-5961. Avoid climbing onto a wet roof yourself.
